This enduring material is designed to increase awarness of the relative effect of nasal anatomy as related to rhinoplasty.

Rhinoplasty, Asian
[6/26/2002 12:00:00 AM]

The same goal exists for rhinoplasty performed on Asians as for rhinoplasty performed on Caucasians, which is to build a natural-appearing structure that blends harmoniously with the face. As a group, Asians require augmentation of the nose to achieve this result, in contrast to Caucasians who usually require reduction.
Comments: Another comprehensive article at eMedicine, this time detailing rhinoplasty surgery in Asian patients. Very thorough and worth reading.
Rhinoplasty, Maxillary Augmentation
[8/30/2002 12:00:00 AM]

Maxillary augmentation denotes the genre of reconstructive surgeries that address the correction of maxillary hypoplasia. Maxillary hypoplasia results from the underdevelopment of the maxillary bones and produces midfacial retrusion, creating the illusion of protuberance of the lower jaw. As a result the profile appears prognathic.
Comments: Extremely thorough and informative.
Nasal Reconstruction, Paramedian Forehead Flap
[6/21/2002 12:00:00 AM]

The origin of plastic surgery is rooted in the relief of facial deformity, specifically the restoration of the nose. Historically, the emphasis has been on the replacement of tissue loss in anatomic layers (cover, lining, support) and on methods of tissue transfer (grafts or flaps).
Comments: A very good and thorough article that discusses this procedure. Be warned, though, it includes some gruesome pictures.

The history of nasal reconstruction mirrors the history of plastic surgery, beginning with what commonly is believed to be the earliest plastic surgery procedure recorded—nasal reconstruction by Sushruta in India during 600-700 BC, as reported by Rogers.
Comments: An excellent and comprehensive article that goes into the reconstructive side of rhinoplasty. A very good read if you're considering reconstructive rhinoplasty.

PAIN MANAGEMENT AND AESTHETIC (COSMETIC) SURGERY
[1/15/2003 12:00:00 AM]

New York, NY (January 15, 2003) - Ask any surgeon what single question patients most often ask prior to undergoing a surgical procedure, and chances are it's "How much will it hurt?" Many aesthetic (cosmetic) surgical procedures cause little or no postoperative pain; but a few can produce short-term acute discomfort. Doctors want every surgery to be as painless as possible, and pain management is now recognized as a vital part of the surgical experience.
Comments: This recent article from the ASAPS talks about major advances in pain managment and how they relate to cosmetic surgery. Covers various issues from local anesthesia to oral opiod combinations.

Resection of the alar or lower lateral nasal cartilages has always been paramount in the tip portion of a rhinoplasty. Much of the work in cleft-lip rhinoplasty has carried over to the purely elective aesthetic operation.
